Types of Picture Books for Children

Board books are sturdy books with a variety of picture and minimal text. They are infant-friendly because babies cannot destroy them easily. They are durable and can withstand babies chewing on them, bending them, and tearing them. They can be used to target vocabulary, teach print referencing, and provide experiences for sensory exploration.

Concept books can use pictures to help children learn about numbers, shapes, colors, letters, categories, opposites, emotions, etc. Having a strong knowledge of concepts helps children develop a foundation for learning, school readiness, and literacy.

Early readers books feature a larger size and a limited vocabulary and form a bridge between concepts books and chapter books. They build vocabulary, comprehension skills and confidence and children work toward independence in reading. They feature engaging stories with relatable characters and introduce children to story elements, character development, narrative storytelling
